One of the most characteristic Italian buildings is undoubtedly the Apulian trullo, which has now become a real luxury property in demand from all over the world, but where are they located and what are the characteristics of the luxury trulli for sale also on Luxforsale?

In the south of Puglia there is Alberobello, a town renowned throughout the world for the presence of trulli. In 1996 these buildings with their particular architecture received UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage Site.

In the southern area of Puglia, and in particular in the Itria Valley, you can easily find trulli of various sizes in the middle of the countryside. Many of them have been refurbished to take on the appearance of marvelous and highly original luxury residences. Buildings of this type are highly sought after by professionals, entrepreneurs and VIPs in love with Puglia.

The trulli "tell" with their unique characteristics a thousand-year history in which, among other things, there are legends and interesting symbols to know and discover.

Structural characteristics of the Trulli

The trullo is recognizable because it is an absolutely unique construction of its kind: it is made of limestone, has a conical roof and is white in color. It is a typical example of slab-structured dry stone building, which once served as a temporary or permanent home for field workers or small landowners. Dry masonry does not require the use of mortar or concrete.

Inside, the trulli usually have a large room with space for the fireplace and various rustic furnishings, typical of a country house. The conformation of the trullo allows for ideal air conditioning in both summer and winter.

According to scholars, the construction of the trulli resumes that of the "Tholos", a Mycenaean tomb dating back to the fourteenth century.

While in the past the space of the trulli was generally restricted, today there is a tendency to make these rooms larger and more hospitable.

The renovation of a typical Apulian trullo must respect some architectural precautions, so as not to distort its original origin. The trend is to make the most of the external area of the trullo, usually occupied by the garden, trees and olive trees.

Symbolism and legends

If you look carefully at the conical roofs of the trulli, you can see white inscriptions still today with a mysterious content. These are mostly symbols that refer to magic or have a propitiatory meaning. Scientists and scholars are still hard at work deciphering most of these inscriptions.

Many of the symbols present on the roofs of the trulli are of religious origin (for example the cross or the sun), some are instead of pagan derivation (such as the ox). There are also primitive and magical symbols, references to zodiac signs, or "grotesque", ie chosen by the owners of the trullo to indicate the family or other. The decorative pinnacles, on the other hand, have the function of keeping misfortune and bad luck away from the trulli and its inhabitants.
